The Bideford class ( 'Aiki Jo Bideford' ) will interest any
Aikido student or other Martial artist that uses or wishes to learn about the short staff or sword.
If you are interested in developing a more healthy body, mind and spirit, then perhaps this is the class for you.
Aikido weapons are there to train your body for the better,
if you practise Aikido then this class can only improve that practice .
It can also be enjoyed by those with no previous experience.
Aiki Jo can also be used as an
exercise system,
training aspects of self defence,
developing health defence,
improving confidence,
body awareness,
co-ordination,
social and self awareness,
balance and power,
even engaging in a pathway to moving meditation.
finding the path on which your spirit walks.
We were all beginners once ... and still we stay students to the end of our days.
Aiki weapons are there to change your body and mind for the better ..... not to 'fight with sticks'.
The founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, used the Jo as preparation against and possibly inspired by, bayonet and spear applications, but it also provided a means to co-ordinate body timing and power,
as well as engage in the universal energies.
O-Sensei had a student called Morihiro Saito, he was a regular and loyal student for the last 23 years of O-Sensei’s life, he looked after him in his old age, he taught for O-Sensei at the Iwama Dojo, the home of Aikido.
Saito Sensei was graded 9th Dan and given the job of developing Jo into a teaching system. O’Sensei’s Jo practice was too extensive even for Saito to remember, but he did his best to adhere to his teacher’s principles, and be true to the art.
My own teacher, Tony Sargeant 7th Dan was a long term student of Saito Sensei, and is still true to his late Sensei's teachings, and his style of Aikido emphasises the part played by weapons more than other styles.
I have followed Tony Sargeant since the mid 1980s and hold him in high regard for his skills and generosity of teaching.

They say that you don't ever really value what you have until it's gone.
Equally you'll not find out anything unless you try.
The Aiki Jo study offers much more than waving a stick- why not find out for yourself?
* Invest in yourself. . . and keep the change. *
Sensei Huw Collingbourne, Founder of Hartland Aikido (from Ki based traditions) has in the spirit of harmony instigated a liaison with teachers from other styles.
Teachers from Ki and Iwama styles come together to share knowledge and skills and the joy of practicing Aikido together and to give students greater opportunities.
When we think we know all about Aikido we should visit another club, another style and find out the truth.
Huw was inspired by and once trained directly under the great Koichi Tohei 10th Dan,
one of the truly genuine masters of Aikido
Where else in one place will you learn Jo kata from both Ki and Iwama backgrounds.
Explore the differences, see the similarities.
See the influence of spear and sword on Jo practice.
Sadly, Covid has been instrumental in sensei Huw ceasing to teach.
A great loss to all those who could have learned from him.
